Suzuki Violin Program

Founded in 1990, the Suzuki Violin Program at Punahou Music School is based on the educational philosophy and mother tongue approach of the late Dr. Shinichi Suzuki. The Suzuki approach is ideally suited for beginning violin students, ages three to seven, and provides a rich musical environment for continuing violin students as they progress through all levels of development.

Parents who are interested in enrolling their children in the program are required to actively participate in the weekly lessons. The Suzuki method requires considerable family commitment, parent participation, active involvement in weekly lessons, and attentive supervision of home practice.

Suzuki students will receive a set of group classes, in addition to their private lessons. The monthly group classes include a small group violin class, a Music Mind Games class, and a large multi-level group class. Each year, a special Suzuki Violin Program recital series is included as one of the monthly group class weeks. Optional community performances and special workshops with visiting guest teachers are also offered through the year.

Group classes are a unique and vital component of Punahou Music School’s Suzuki Violin Program. They offer a highly motivating learning environment, where students can learn by observing older students, collaborate, socialize, and play together with their peers. The monthly group classes replace the private lesson appointment for one week each month. There are no make-up lessons offered to students who miss group classes or partner lessons.

Families enrolled in the Suzuki Violin Program are highly encouraged to join Suzuki Talent Education of Hawaii, a non-profit organization of parents, families, violin students and teachers dedicated and committed to promoting the educational philosophy of Dr. Shinichi Suzuki.
As there is limited space available in the Suzuki Violin Program, interested parents should contact the Music School at 808.944.5829 or musicschool@punahou.edu for more information and request to be placed on the prospective new student list.
