Grades 2 – 5
This information is to advise you of traffic patterns and pickup areas for grades 2 – 5.
With the opening of the second phase of the Kosasa Community all grades 2 – 5 students should be dropped off and picked up from the 2 – 5 pickup area. To allow traffic to move smoothly and for the safety of all children, please follow these instructions.
Morning Drop-off
- Drop-off for all of grades 2 – 5 will be outside of the Junior School Learning Commons, along Piper’s Pali.
- There are two entrances to Piper’s Pali from Mānoa Road.
- The Track Bypass Road (Simon Way) above the track is a right-turn-only entrance to access grades 2 – 5.
- Upper Mānoa Gate can be entered via left or right turns from Mānoa Road, and provides access to Kindergarten – grade 5 drop-off areas.
- If entering through Upper Mānoa Gate, on Piper’s Pali near the Omidyar K – 1 Neighborhood, the thru lane is the right-hand lane. Once past K – 1, this lane becomes the 2 – 5 drop-off/pickup lane and the left lane becomes the Piper’s Pali thru lane to exit at Vancouver Drive or Wilder Avenue.
- Follow the security guards’ directions. They are there to assist.
- Once drop-off at 2 – 5 is complete, vehicles can then use the middle lane to proceed to Case Middle School drop off or exit campus.
- Students can then choose to either walk through the Learning Commons breezeway (2nd and 3rd grade) or use the path that goes along the banyan tree to access their studios (4th and 5th grade).
Please note: The entrance to Kosasa Community across from the Vancouver Drive exit will be locked before 8 a.m. so please do not drop off students at this location.
Afternoon Pickup
- Place your child’s name placard on your vehicle visor or dashboard before you reach the pickup area. (Please place all placards for multiple children on your dashboard so we can help you merge into the appropriate pickup lanes.) Placards are included in your welcome packet.
- If entering through Upper Mānoa Gate, on Piper’s Pali near the Omidyar K – 1 Neighborhood, the thru lane is the right-hand lane. Once past K – 1, this lane becomes the 2 – 5 drop-off/pickup lane and the left lane becomes the Piper’s Pali thru lane to exit at Vancouver Street or Wilder Avenue.
- Families exiting the K – 1 pickup area will need to merge with the 2 – 5 pickup lane. This will be done at the intersection where Piper’s Pali and the Track Bypass Road (Simon Way) come together across from the entrance to the President’s driveway. A Punahou security guard will be there to assist with the merge. (Over)
- The 2 – 5 pickup area will be divided into two smaller pickups – one for grades 2 – 3 and another for grades 4 – 5.
- At the start of the grades 2 – 5 pickup, vehicles must split into two lanes, the right lane for 2 – 3 pickup and the center lane for 4 – 5 pickup. Please pull all the way forward so that we can accommodate as many vehicles as possible at one time. a. Grades 2 – 3 pickup begins immediately following the Chapel Access Ramp and extends to the end of the Junior School Learning Commons. b. Grades 4 – 5 pickup begins at the Banyan Tree and extends to the raised crosswalk just beyond the Flanders Dance Pavilion and Barwick Playground.
- Please pick up students in their respective areas. Please see the enclosed map for more details. If you have multiple students in 2 – 5 we ask that siblings go to the pick-up area for the youngest child and wait together.
- The end of the 2 – 3 pickup will also be the crossover point for 4 – 5 pickup entry. A Punahou security guard will be directing vehicles out of the 2 – 3 pickup lane to exit the School, at the same time, directing vehicles into the 4 – 5 pickup lane. Additionally, the guard will be stopping all three lanes of traffic and helping pedestrians cross from the Junior School Learning Commons to the Dance Pavilion. As you can see, this will require your patience and attentiveness to ensure everyone can move safely.
Important Pointers
- Faculty and/or Academy student workers will help students into and out of vehicles. Please be sure the door is closed and helpers and children are clear before moving.
- No parking in drop-off or pickup areas. If you must leave your vehicle, please find a parking space or see a security guard for assistance.
- Please refrain from cellphone use when driving on campus.
- Students will be ready for pickup at the following times and locations
Kindergarten | 2:15 | At Omidyar K – 1 |
Grade 1 | 2:25 | At Omidyar K – 1 |
Grades 2 – 3 | 2:40 | Starting at the new Junior School Learning Commons |
Grades 4 – 5 | 2:50 | Starting at the curb fronting the Banyan Tree |
It is important that everyone is aware that pickup from K – 1 to 2 – 5 will intersect and this will require patience and attentiveness from everyone to ensure the safety of students.
If you have a child in K – 1 and are interested in having your child escorted by a K – 1 Walker to the Kosasa Community, for pick-up with a 2 – 5 sibling, please complete the After School Pickup and Activities Sheet included in the Kindergarten – Grade 1 Welcome Packet.
