Extended Learning Sports Programs
Athletics at Punahou are an extension of the classroom, an opportunity to reinforce the values, qualities and skills that are an essential part of a Punahou education.
Our general philosophy for athletics affirms the development of the cultural, intellectual and physical potential of each student. It encourages student athletes to be the best that they can be and to be a true team player with the idea that teamwork is what defines winning.
From 2018 – 2021, Punahou was recognized annually as one of the top 10 High School Athletic Programs in the nation by MaxPreps, a digital source of high school sports owned by CBS Interactive, a division of CBS Sports.
Additionally, in 2022, MaxPreps ranked Punahou the top high school athletics program in the nation over the last two decades.
Membership
Punahou is a proud member of Interscholastic League of Honolulu (ILH) and the Hawaii High School Athletic Association (HHSAA).
Coaches constantly attempt to diffuse the “win at all costs” attitude that is so prevalent in high school athletics.
Understanding that they play a vital role in developing the whole child, Punahou is committed to working with coaches so they are best prepared to support their student athletes beyond the drills and mechanics of their sport.

Flaming P is Punahou's annual fall school spirit celebration, a tradition that dates back to the late ‘60s. The family event includes an evening of great food, keiki activities, a pep rally and the lighting of a 20-foot tall “P” structure.
