History
Completed in 2005, Kuaihelani Learning Center honors Abigail Kuaihelani Campbell.
Abigail Kuaihelani Maipinepine CampbellAcknowledged as a heroine of the Hawaiian people, Kuaihelani (mythical cloud island of the gods) Campbell aided in an attempt to restore Queen Liliʻuokalani to the throne in 1893 by collecting thousands of signatures throughout the Islands in an effort “to preserve and maintain, by all legal and peaceful means and measures, the independent autonomy of the islands of Hawaiʻi nei.”
James Campbell, Abigail’s husband, was one of Hawaiʻi’s foremost business pioneers. He believed in the wise stewardship of land to provide a positive environment for growth and a better quality of life for Hawaiʻi’s people. His position, protection and full support allowed Abigail to become politically active at a time when people felt that a woman’s place was in the home.
