Endowed Funds
Tiger Tom Metcalf
The Old School Award was created by the Punahou Alumni Association to recognize an individual who may not be an alumnus, but “who exemplifies the spirit of Punahou through outstanding service to the School.” It was more than fitting for Dean “Tiger Tom” Metcalf to receive the award when he retired in 1990. By then, he had literally defined the position of Academy dean and shepherded more than 3,000 students through the Punahou experience.
With his unique blend of wry wit, practical common sense, and a well of tough love, Tiger Tom guided the Classes of 1959, 1963, 1967, 1971, 1976, 1980, 1984 and 1988 through the Academy.
As the Class of ’67 approached its 55th Reunion, Byron Washom ’67 recalled Dean Metcalf’s counsel that “whatever he accomplished in life would be a dividend of his willingness to take risks while pursuing his passion.” Grateful for this early advice, Washom proposed that the Class of ’67 create an endowed financial aid fund in honor of their former dean.
Initially, Metcalf was reticent about the recognition, but gradually warmed to the plan. With characteristic understatement, he agreed that the Tiger Tom Metcalf Endowed Financial Aid Fund would support students with financial need who are making a difference but haven’t been recognized for their actions. Off to an enthusiastic start, the Class of ’67 hopes that other classes will add to the fund over the years to convey our collective mahalo to a great mentor and friend.
