Punahou Archives follows and adheres to the Punahou School Student and Parent Code of Conduct. In addition, below are guidelines for all researchers and inquiries to follow:

Copying and Publishing Materials

To facilitate research, users may request copies of archival materials, with the understanding that not all requests may be fulfilled.
Users may be required to provide a brief abstract (100-250 words) about their project, book, publication, etc.
Archival materials used in research must be cited (footnotes, bibliography, caption, etc.) in any resulting publication and the Archives must be credited for all reproductions in publications.
Researchers must seek written permission from the copyright owner to reprint or publish archival materials in any way. The Archives assumes no responsibility for any infringement of Copyright Law. Requester is responsible to obtain the copyright holder's permission for the publication or reproduction of all materials, published or unpublished.
One copy of publications resulting from extensive research at the Archives or containing reproductions of materials from the Archives must be submitted to the Archives within 60 days of publication.

Citation Requirements

Please include the following elements when citing Punahou Archives materials:

Author or creator's name; title of Work; Date; Publication information; Collection name; Box and folder; Punahou School Archives, Honolulu, Hawai'i.

Do I have to make an appointment to visit the Archives?

For students, faculty and staff on campus, we welcome walk-ins and strongly suggest an initial e-mail with the Archivist so we may accurately identify your need and work with you to fulfill the inquiry. Collections are stored in multiple locations and require gentle movements of shelving and boxes. We encourage contact with Archives as soon as possible and in advance of any visits so that planning and materials may be retrieved in a timely manner.

External to Punahou Researchers
All are welcome to explore the resources, materials and collection in our digital archives. While we are a private collection, we do schedule appointments for external researchers. Please contact archives@punahou.edu to schedule an appointment.
Why isn’t more of your collection available online?

Punahou Archives recognizes the strong desire to access our historical and treasured assets. We balance the need for access via digitization with preservation and conservation. We are continually digitizing materials with a priority of photographic prints and school publications. Be sure to visit our digital archives.

Because digitization is labor-intensive, requiring significant systems support to manage, preserve, and provide access to the content, digitization is a long-term program. Further, due to copyright, privacy, and confidentiality, not all digital content can be placed on the open web. Researchers are encouraged to send questions to archives@punahou.edu.
Can I use the Punahou Archives for my research, even if I am not related to the institution?

Yes! All are welcome to explore the resources, materials and collection in our digital archives. While we are a private collection, we do schedule appointments for external researchers. Please contact archives@punahou.edu to schedule an appointment.
